Opuntia dejecta is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet dejecta means '(Latin dejectus) lowered, deep-set, overhanging'. A Spanish common name is "Nopal Chamacuero".

description

Opuntia dejecta grows in the shape of a tree with spread to pendulous branches and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The green to gray-green, rather thick, narrow, lanceolate shoot sections are 15 to 20 inches long and 5 to 8 inches wide. The glochids are whitish. The usually two slightly spread, yellow or slightly pink thorns turn gray with age. They are up to 4 inches long.

The stamens protrude from the dark red flowers up to 5 centimeters long . The deep red, smooth, spherical fruits are covered with numerous areoles .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cuba was originally named as the distribution area of Opuntia dejecta . It is more likely, however, that the species is common in tropical Mexico and in Central America in El Salvador , Guatemala and Honduras .

The first description was in 1834 by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck . A nomenclatory synonym is Nopalea dejecta (Salm-Dyck) Salm-Dyck (1850).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data. The future development of the populations is unknown.
