Opuntia discolor is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet discolor means 'different colored, colorful'.

description

Opuntia discolor has low shrubby growth with numerous spread branches and forms dense groups. The dark green, bare, linear to lanceolate, often almost turning, shoot sections often have purple spots. They are 4 to 12 inches long and 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide. The areoles are dark brown, the late appearing, then conspicuous glochids are brown. The one to six needle-like, almost protruding, patterned thorns are brownish and up to 3 centimeters long.

The pale yellow to orange-yellow flowers are up to 3 centimeters long and have the same diameter. The small fruits are red.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia discolor is common in Bolivia in the departments of Cochabamba , Chuquisaca , Santa Cruz and Tarija and in Argentina in the province of Santiago del Estero at altitudes of 300 to 1800 meters.

The first description was in 1919 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose .
