Opuntia gosseliniana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the French botanist Robert Roland-Gosselin (1854–1925).

Opuntia gosseliniana grows shrubby, branching from the base and forms compact groups with heights of up to 1 meter. The almost always reddish or somewhat purple-colored, usually thin, plate-shaped shoot sections are up to 20 centimeters long and almost as wide. The areoles are 2 to 2.5 centimeters apart. The numerous glochids are brownish. The one or two thorns , which can also be missing, are often curved, flexible, rust-colored to yellowish or brownish-red. They reach a length of 4 to 10 centimeters.

The yellow flowers reach a diameter of up to 7.5 centimeters. The egg-shaped fruits are not thorny, but are covered with numerous glochids.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia gosseliniana is distributed in the southern United States in the states of Arizona and in the Mexican states of Sonora , Chihuahua and Baja California up to an altitude of 900 meters.

It was first described in 1902 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Nomenclatural synonyms are Platyopuntia gosseliniana (FACWeber) Frič (no date, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Opuntia violacea var. Gosseliniana (FACWeber) LDBenson (1969) and Opuntia chlorotica var. Gosseliniana (FACWeber) DJFerguson (1988)

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
