Opuntia spinulifera is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet spinulifera means '(lat. Spinulifer) carrying spines'.
description
Opuntia spinulifera grows tree-shaped with numerous branches appearing from the base and reaches heights of growth of up to 1.3 meters. The light green, slightly glaucous , bald, strong, obovate to circular shoot sections are 20 to 25 centimeters long and 15 to 20 centimeters wide. They have red leaf rudiments up to 6 millimeters long . The often recessed areoles are yellowish, the glochids yellow. The one to nine strikingly unequal, whitish to whitish yellow thorns , which can also be missing, are thin, hair-like, flattened at their base and often lie on the surface of the shoot. They are 0.5 to 1.3 inches long.
The yellow flowers reach a length of up to 5 centimeters. The yellowish short spherical-cylindrical to egg-shaped fruits are 4 to 5 centimeters long.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia spinulifera is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , México and Tlaxcala .
The first description by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck was published in 1834.
