Ora Namir

Ora Namir ( Hebrew אורה נמיר; * September 1, 1930 in Hadera , League of Nations mandate for Palestine ; † July 7, 2019 in Tel Aviv ) was an Israeli social democratic politician ( HaMa'arach , Awoda ) and diplomat .

Life

She served as an officer in the IDF during the Arab-Israeli War in 1948 . She then studied Classical and English Literature at Hunter College in New York City . She was married to Mordechai Namir , who was also a minister.

From 1974 to 1996 she was a member of the Knesset . In 1992 she became Minister of the Environment . 1992–1996 she was Minister for Welfare and Social Services. She then became the Israeli ambassador to the People's Republic of China and Mongolia .
