geography

The beach is part of the larger Pelham Bay Park and lies between the Rodman's Neck Peninsula and the Hunters Island Nature Reserve at the western end of Long Island Sound . The beach is divided into 13 sections, has a length of 1.8 km and an area of almost 0.5 km². Since 2010, the long crescent-shaped arch of Orchard Beach has been closed in the south by an extended artificial headland. The beach offers a view of City Island, Bronx from all points .

history

Orchard Beach was part of the plans of the architect and city planner Robert Moses . The beach was created by putting in excavated earth and then applying sand that was dredged from the deposits off the Rockaway Peninsula in south Queens and off the Sandy Hook Peninsula in New Jersey . This work was carried out in the 1930s and connected, among other things, the two islands Twin Island and Hunters Island to the mainland. A few years ago, the United States Army Corps of Engineers replenished the sand removed by the current with new sand that was dredged from the Ambrose Channel in Lower New York Bay and deposited here.

Furnishing

Orchard Beach is closed to the west by a promenade. There is a central pavilion with shops and restaurants. There are also two picnic areas and two playgrounds, a large parking lot and sports fields for basketball, volleyball and handball.

Orchard Beach, like all of Pelham Bay Park, is administered by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation .
