Orchestra USA

The Orchestra USA was a jazz big band with strings founded in 1962 by John Lewis and Gunther Schuller , which performed and recorded third-stream compositions. In addition to compositions by Lewis and Schuller, Gary McFarland , Miljenko Prohaska , Hall Overton , Teo Macero , Jimmy Giuffre , Benny Golson , William O. Smith and Hans Werner Henze , works of classical modernism were also performed - by Darius Milhaud , Charles Ives , Igor Stravinsky and Paul Hindemith . Musicians included Eric Dolphy , Jim Hall , Richard Davis , Phil Woods , Leo Wright and guest soloists Benny Golson, Gerry Mulligan and Ornette Coleman . In December 1962, the ensemble and the Modern Jazz Quartet gave their first concert in the New York Philharmonic. Differences of opinion between the musicians and musical directors led to the dissolution of the orchestra in 1965.
