The ruins of the Ordensburg Doblen (also called Doblen Castle ; Latvian Dobeles pils ) are in the town of Dobele (German Baltic Doblen) in historic Semgallia , Latvia . The Order Castle was in 1335 by the Livonian Order on the remains of an earlier semgallischen Wallenburg built.

history

In place of today's castle ruins there was a hill fort, first mentioned in 1254, which was the regional center of the resident Semgallians . During the conquest of the region by the Livonian Order, the Wallburg was besieged several times by the Order between 1279 and 1290. In the winter of 1280/81 the Livonian Order under Konrad von Feuchtwangen attacked the castle, but failed to capture the Wallburg. Finally, the hill fort was cremated in 1290.

In the years 1335-1347 the Livonian Order built a stone castle on the remains of the abandoned hill fort. In the following years a settlement developed around the castle. Castle master Eberhard von Monheim (1328–1340) Doblen expanded it in its original form. His successor Goswin von Herike (1345-1359) completed and strengthened the castle. Until 1562 the castle was the seat of Komtur Doblen. Several regional diets were held in the castle in the 16th and 17th centuries . In 1621 and 1625 the castle was occupied by Swedish troops under Gustav II Adolf .

From 1643 to 1649 the castle was the residence of the widow of Duke Friedrich Kettler , Elisabeth Magdalena von Pomerania , who lived there with her foster son, who later became Duke Jakob Kettler . During the Second Northern War the castle was occupied by Sweden in 1658 and then repaired by Duke Jakob Kettler. During the Great Northern War , the castle was reoccupied by Swedes in 1701. King Charles XII. stayed in the castle for six days. In the course of the war the castle was badly destroyed and abandoned from 1736.

In 1915, the German Kaiser Wilhelm II held a troop inspection at the foot of the castle hill.

architecture

The hilltop castle is located on a high hill on the right bank of the Perse River, well protected on two sides by slopes. In the south, the castle area is delimited by a moat . The type of the castle is a house castle that is close to the tower castles. The four decorative oriel towers made of brick, which are joined by the cadences of the arched friezes on the sides, are characteristic of the construction period .
