Ordog is a Finnish death doom band from Tornio that was formed in 2005.

history

The band was founded in early 2005 by keyboardist and singer Aleksi Martikainen and bassist, guitarist, drummer and singer Valtteri Isometsä. Then in 2006 the first demo appeared under the name I , which was shortly followed by II . Through these demos the owner of Ostra Records became aware of Ordog and signed the band. In the summer of 2006, the recording of the debut album The Crow and the Storm began before it was released in December. During this time, Jussi Harju was a permanent keyboardist in the band. III was recorded in March 2007 and released in June. In spring 2007, the recording of the second album Life Is Too Short for Learning to Live began . Friends Kimmo Huhtala on bass and Risto Väänänen as drummer joined them for the first live performances. However, the band only performed once, as Isometsä then had to concentrate on mixing the album and thus appearances were not possible. In 2008 the band signed a record deal with Violent Journey Records , which released the album in August. Shortly thereafter, the band got the offer to hold a gig in Moscow and St. Petersburg with Throes of Dawn . Huhtala and Väänänen were then removed from the live line-up and rehearsals began with Olli-Pekka Rissanen as the new bass player and Jani Niemelä as the new drummer. In the summer of 2009, recordings began on the third album, which was titled Remorse . A concert was given in Helsinki in November . After that, the band continued work on the album, which was finally released in January 2011. Shortly after the release, work began on the next album, with the result that most of the songs were completed by the end of the year. After a little delay, the band contacted their sound engineer friend Ilkka Kalliainen in October 2012 , with whom the recording began in January 2013. Since there were problems arranging the schedule, Isometsä asked Kalliainen to play the bass for the album. When he agreed, Kalliainen came as a permanent bass player to the cast. Later that year, Tapio "Hautsi" Hautalampi joined as a drummer. When the album was recorded, mixed and mastered in February 2014, it was released in March under the name Trail for the Broken . In January 2015, the band held two gigs in Oulu and Rovaniemi , but Hautalampi was unable to attend, so Isometsä took this position, Kalliainen switched to electric guitar and Rissanen returned as bassist. After these first appearances in five years, Rissanen remained a permanent member of the band, so that it now consisted of six members, with Isometsä and Kalliainen on the electric guitars. Rehearsals for the next album began in the summer, and the recordings began in November. During the recording, Kalliainen left the cast for personal reasons. In 2016 the next album was released under the name The Grand Wall .

style

Steve from whiskey-soda.de wrote in his review of Remorse that it is not enough to call the music just Doom Metal. It is sluggish like Funeral Doom , but it also has a certain dynamic, especially due to the atmospheric keyboard. This would sometimes produce melancholy and desperate images. The electric guitars are oppressive, but sound monotonous, which means that atmosphere is lost. The bass disappears completely in the background. In his review of Trail for the Broken , Jan Wischkowski from Metal.de stated that the album was partly drowsy and partly poignant. The keyboard and the electric guitar would form a duo, whereby the songs are also strongly characterized by monotony. Marco's “Big Daddy” Garcia from metal-temple.com noted that Trail for the Broken builds on Doom Metal in the style of Paradise Lost , My Dying Bride and Anathema, adding more elements to the genre without, however, exceeding the genre boundaries. The music is very melodic and more delicate and melancholy than that of the representatives mentioned.
