Oreidis Despaigne

Oreidis Despaigne Terry (born September 20, 1981 in Cienfuegos ) is a former Cuban judoka . He won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2007 and 2010.

Athletic career

The 1.86 m tall Despaigne fought in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 100 kilograms. He was Cuban champion in this weight class in 2003, 2005 and from 2009 to 2011. In 2003 he also won the open class.

In 2002 Despaigne finished second behind the Canadian Nicolas Gill at the Pan American Championships in Santo Domingo. In 2003 Despaigne won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo . At the 2003 World Championships , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Georgian Iveri Jikurauli . The following year he defeated the Brazilian Mario Sabino in the final of the Pan American Championships . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens Despaigne retired after 39 seconds in the second round against the German Michael Jurack .

In 2005 Despaigne won the Central American and Caribbean Championships. In 2006 he won the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires. In May 2007 he defeated the Brazilian Leonardo Leite in the final of the Pan American Championships in Montreal . At the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in July , he defeated the Brazilian Luciano Corrêa in the semifinals and the Canadian Keith Morgan in the final . Another two months later, the World Championships also took place in Rio de Janeiro . Despaigne defeated the Kazakh Asqat Schitkejew in the quarter-finals and lost to the British Peter Cousins in the semi-finals . In the battle for bronze Despaigne defeated the Georgian Levan Zhorzholiani . In May 2008 Despaigne finished third at the Pan American Championships in Miami. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 Despaigne retired in his second fight against the South Korean Jang Seong-ho .

In 2009 Despaigne won the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires. At the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam, he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Azerbaijani Elmar Qasımov . In April 2010 he won both the light heavyweight title and the open class at the Pan American Championships in San Salvador. At the World Championships in Tokyo he defeated Elmar Qasımov in the quarterfinals and then lost in the semifinals to the Japanese Takamasa Anai . He won the battle for bronze against the Uzbeks Oʻtkir Qurbonov . In 2011 Despaigne defeated Leonardo Leite in the final of the Pan American Championships in Guadalajara. Half a year later, the Pan-American Games also took place in Guadalajara . In the final Despaigne was defeated by the Brazilian Luciano Corrêa. In 2012 Despaigne won again bronze at the Pan American Championships in Montreal. At the end of his career, Despaigne retired at the 2012 Olympic Games in London in his opening match against the Uzbek Ramziddin Sayidov .

The older brother Yosvany Despaigne also took part in the Olympic Games three times.
