Keith Morgan (judoka)

Keith Laurence Morgan (born November 12, 1973 in Calgary ) is a former Canadian judoka . He finished fifth in the 2000 Olympics and won the 1995 Pan American Games.

Athletic career

The 1.78 m tall Keith Morgan fought until 1996 in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 95 kilograms. In 1992 he was fifth at the Junior World Championships. In 1994 he won the first of seven Canadian championship titles. In November 1994 he reached the final of the Jigoro Kano Cup and was then defeated by the Japanese Shigeru Okaizumi . In March 1995 the Pan American Games 1995 took place in Mar del Plata . Morgan won in the final against the Brazilian Daniel Dell'Aquila . In 1996 Morgan won his opening match at the Olympic Games in Atlanta against the Mexican Arturo Gutierrez with a small score (Chui). In the last sixteen he was eliminated after 2:03 minutes against Antonio Felicite from Mauritius.

In 1997 Morgan fought in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 86 kilograms. At the 1997 World Championships , he finished seventh. After the reorganization of the weight classes, Morgan competed in the middleweight division from 1998 to 2005, the weight class that now reached up to 90 kilograms. In 1999 he won the Universiade in Palma de Mallorca. A month later, Morgan won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg . At the 1999 World Championships , Morgan finished seventh like in 1997. In September 2000 at the Olympic Games in Sydney Morgan defeated Jean-Claude Raphael from Mauritius in the quarterfinals . After his semi-final defeat against the Dutchman Mark Huizinga, Morgan lost to the Ukrainian Ruslan Maschurenko after 50 seconds in the battle for a bronze medal . In late 2000, Morgan won the Pan American Championships in Orlando.

In 2001, Morgan finished seventh again at the World Championships . In 2001 he received a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. The highlight of the 2002 season was the Commonwealth Games in Manchester , with Morgan losing to Winston Gordon in the final . In 2003 Morgan won the silver medal at the Pan American Championships behind Brazilian Carlos Honorato . Two months later, Morgan defeated the Brazilian in the semi-finals of the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo , in the final he was defeated by Brian Olson from the United States. At the World Championships in Osaka Morgan defeated the Cuban Yosvane Despaigne in the quarterfinals . After his semi-final defeat against the Georgian Surab Swiadauri , Morgan also lost the battle for bronze against Carlos Honorato. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Morgan lost to the South Korean Hwang Hui-tae in the quarterfinals and was then eliminated in the hope round against Mark Huizinga.

From 2006 Morgan fought in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 100 kilograms. In 2007 he won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. Two months later he reached the final of the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and received the silver medal behind the Cuban Oreydis Despaigne . In 2008 Morgan won again at the Pan American Championships. At the Olympic Games in Beijing he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Romanian Daniel Brata after 26 seconds.

Keith Morgan's twin brother Colin also took part in the Olympic Games as a judoka. Keith Morgan is married to water polo player Waneek Horn , who was fifth in the 2000 Olympic selection in Sydney .
