Yosvany Despaigne

Yosvany Oreidis Despaigne Terry (born April 13, 1976 in Cienfuegos ) is a former Cuban judoka who competed for Italy from 2007 . He won the 2001 Universiade.

Athletic career

The 1.80 m tall Despaigne fought until 2004 mainly in the middleweight, the weight class up to 86 kilograms (until 1997) and up to 90 kilograms (from 1998). He was from 1995 to 1999, as well as 2003 and 2005 Cuban champion in this weight class.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he was defeated in the quarterfinals by South Korean Jeon Ki-young . In the hope round he was eliminated against the Dutchman Mark Huizinga . In October 1996 Despaigne won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships in San Juan, a year later he won bronze again in Guadalajara. At the 1997 World Championships in Paris he defeated Mark Huizinga in his first fight, but lost in the quarter-finals to the Lithuanian Algimantas Merkevičius and was eliminated in the hoping round against the Italian Michele Monti . In 1998 he won bronze at the Pan American Championships in Santo Domingo for the third time in a row.

In 1999 Despaigne won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Palma de Mallorca . A month later he also won bronze at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg . At the World Championships in Birmingham he was defeated in the quarter-finals by the Japanese Hidehiko Yoshida . After a victory against the Georgian Giorgi Gugawa and a defeat against the Romanian Adrian Croitoru Despaigne finished seventh. In early 2000 he reached the finals at the Tournoi de Paris , where he was defeated by the French Frédéric Demontfaucon . In the weeks that followed, he won the World Cup tournaments in Leonding and Rome and came second behind the German Sven Helbing at the World Masters in Munich. At the Olympic Games in Sydney he lost to Mark Huizinga at the beginning and was eliminated from the United States in the hope round against Brian Olson . In 2001 he won the World Masters in Munich and took third place in Leonding and Rome. At the World Championships in Munich , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Canadian Keith Morgan . At the 2001 Summer Universiade in Beijing, he won the final against Russian Dmitri Morozov .

In 2002 he won the title at the Pan American Championships in Santo Domingo. In 2003 he defeated the Spaniard David Alarza in the final of the Tournoi de Paris . At the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, he won a bronze medal after losing to the Brazilian Carlos Honorato in the quarterfinals . At the World Championships in Osaka, he lost in the quarterfinals to Keith Morgan. After victories in the hope round over Mark Huizinga and the Chilean Gabriel Lama , Despaigne lost the battle for bronze against the Belarusian Sjarhej Kucharenka . At the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 Despaigne retired in his first fight against the Russian Chassanbi Taow .

From 2007 Yosvany Despaigne fought for Italy in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 100 kilograms. In 2010 he won the Italian championship. But he no longer achieved international success.

The younger brother Oreidis Despaigne also took part in the Olympic Games three times for Cuba.
