Peter Cousins
Peter Cousins (born March 3, 1981 in Harlow , England ) is a former British judoka . In 2007 he won a silver medal at the World Championships.
Athletic career
The 1.77 m tall Peter Cousins was mostly active in the middleweight division until 2005, the weight class up to 90 kilograms. In 1998 he won a bronze medal at the World Youth Games in Moscow. In the same year he was fifth in the U20 World Championships. In 1999 he won a bronze medal at the U20 European Championships. In 2000 he was defeated in the final of the U20 World Championships to the Georgian Surab Swiadauri . A month and a half later, Cousins won the U20 European Championships. In 2005 he won his first World Cup tournament in Bucharest.
At the 2005 World Championships in Cairo, Cousins competed in the light heavyweight division for the first time, the weight class up to 100 kilograms. He was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Hungarian Dániel Hadfi . At the European Championships in 2006 in Tampere he was defeated by Israeli Ariel Zeevi in the round of 16 , with victories over Serb Ryu Mijalković , Austrian Franz Birkfellner and Belarusian Ihar Makarau , cousins fought their way to the bronze medal. The following year, Cousins retired at the 2007 European Championships in Belgrade in his first fight against the German Dimitri Peters . At the 2007 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Cousins defeated the Lithuanian Egidijus Žilinskas in the quarter-finals and the Cuban Oreidis Despaigne in the semifinals . In the final, Cousins lost to the Brazilian Luciano Corrêa . At the European Championships in Lisbon in 2008, Cousins lost to the French Christophe Humbert in the quarterfinals . With victories over the Georgian Levan Zhorzholiani and Egidijus Žilinskas he reached the battle for bronze, which he lost to the German Benjamin Behrla . At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Cousins retired in his opening match against Levan Zhorzholiani. Peter Cousins was still active until 2012, but could no longer build on his successes of 2006 and 2007.
Peter's twin brother Thomas Cousins was also successful as a judoka.
