Oren Lavie (* 1976 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli composer , musician , writer and director .

Life

Oren Lavie grew up in Israel . In 1997, his play Sticks and Wheels (in Hebrew) and his production of the same received the main prizes at the Acco Theater Festival ("Acco Festival of Alternative Israeli Theater"). The piece was performed in Tel Aviv until 1998. In the same year he went to London to study theater directing at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art ( LAMDA ). After graduating, two of his plays were performed in London theaters. They contain musical interludes that he has composed himself.

In 2001 Lavie moved to New York , where he got by with a variety of activities, beginning with songwriting. When these had accumulated, he began in Berlin in 2003 to make recordings of them on his own. He finished his first album The Opposite Side of the Sea in 2006, it was released in Germany at the end of January 2007 and Europe-wide in early February.

According to his own statement, his musical role models include Tom Waits , Jacques Brel and Leonard Cohen . The core of his very melody-oriented compositions are guitar or piano and his singing, supported by string arrangements and various other, mostly non-electronic instruments that are used selectively.

In 2014, Oren Lavie published Der Bär, who wasn't there, his first children's book, the original of which was published in German and has subsequently been translated into more than 20 languages. According to their own information, the publication of a second children's book, the original of which will appear in Israel, is in prospect.
