Orla Gartland (2013)

Orla Gartland (born February 3, 1995 in Dublin ) is an Irish singer and songwriter . It can be seen as an outstanding example of an increasing number of artists who are first known primarily through the Internet and only then reach a rapidly growing audience offline via stages and studios. For years, posted Gartland at YouTube with minimal equipment in the home recorded cover versions of many songs and first own works, reaching their YouTube channel to December 2013 over 10 million visitors.

Gartland sees their music in the folk-pop tradition . She is most strongly influenced by Regina Spektor and Imogen Heap .

life and career

Gartland's musical development began early. According to her own statement, she has been playing the violin and Irish instruments since she was five. In addition, her parents had given her guitar lessons since she was 12.

Gartland posted her first YouTube video when she was 13. She explained that at that time she had been playing guitar for over a year, but had hardly any singing experience and, for example, knew nothing about breathing techniques.

The transition from song interpretations, which were produced in a separate framework and distributed on the Internet, to presentations in front of a live audience began with smaller performances. For example, a video was produced with Gartland's song All the little details in a coffee shop during ongoing operations.

In 2012, Gartland appeared as the opening act for Ryan O'Shaughnessy as a participant in Britain's Got Talent and for the Scottish singer and songwriter Nina Nesbitt at Bewley's Cafe Theater.

On June 17, 2012 Gartland released their single Devil on my Shoulder on iTunes and reached number 2 on the Irish singer-songwriter charts through a sold-out show at The Academy in Dublin , which has now been headlined .

A first high point in Gartland's artistic development was the EP Roots , released on November 11, 2013 , the title track of which was “Single of the Week” on iTunes in Great Britain and Ireland. The Irish Mirror published a full-page portrait of Gartland on November 24, 2013 with the news that Roots had reached number 1 in the Irish album charts, number 15 in the British album charts and number 2 in the US singer-songwriter charts.

After the top rankings on their debut album, Gartland completed an increasing number of appearances and interviews. In July 2013 she performed at five shows in Great Britain and Ireland. On November 20, 2013 she appeared on The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on The Irish Broadcasting Company on Today FM and gave an interview. Gartland's promotional tour for Roots took him to ten cities in Ireland and the UK in 2014.

Orla Gartland got involved beyond her artistic career by recording the song Cast your stone for the compilation album Simple things , released on November 15, 2013 by Niall Breslin to support suicide prevention in Ireland . They also attended a performance by the Simple Things musician in RTÉ program The Saturday night show part.

Gartland also presented the title song of their EP Roots on January 4, 2014 in The Saturday Night Show on RTÉ .

The Irish Daily Star chose Gartland as one of the "20 music acts to watch in 2014". In its January 27, 2014 issue of the Irish Independent reported Gartland as one of "Ireland's Most Influential Youth".

The opinion-forming website GoldenPlec in the Irish music scene published a lengthy interview with her after Gartland had sold out performances in Ireland and Great Britain and selected her as one of the best solo artists in Ireland for Plec Pick 2014 . On February 5, 2014 Gartland gave an interview in The John Murray Show on RTÉ Radio 1 and performed the title song by Roots live.

Also in February 2014, The Sunday Times reported in an article on Gartland about their “15-year plan for continued success”.
