The Orlen Germany GmbH , own spelling ORLEN Germany , is a medium-sized oil companies based in Elmshorn . It operates gas stations under the name star .
The company belongs to the Polish petroleum and petrochemical group PKN Orlen , employs around 150 people and generated sales of 3.38 billion euros in 2017.
Orlen Germany currently operates more than 580 petrol stations, which are mainly located in the northern half of Germany , particularly in North Rhine-Westphalia , Lower Saxony , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Hamburg , Schleswig-Holstein , Berlin , Brandenburg , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt , Thuringia , Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate and thus has a market share of around five percent in the overall German fuel market.
history
Orlen Germany was founded in 2003 with the acquisition of 494 filling stations from the British energy company BP , the so-called Nord-Paket . As part of the takeover of Veba Oel and Aral, the Federal Cartel Office obliged BP to surrender four percent of the joint BP-Aral market share. The purchase price was 140 million euros plus current assets on the date of sale; this was the largest foreign engagement of a Polish company to date.
The first filling station under the name Orlen in Germany was opened on June 6, 2003 in Berlin in the presence of the then Federal Minister for Economics and Labor , Wolfgang Clement , and the then Polish Minister for Economics, Labor and Social Policy, Jerzy Hausner.
The establishment of a company and market entry were thus entirely dominated by the European unification process and served as a sign that the Polish economy was prepared for the upcoming membership in the European Union . Finally, on June 7, 2003, the referendum took place, with which the people of Poland voted to join the EU.
Brands
The company, whose name is derived from the Polish words orzeł, German eagle , and energia, German energy , operates its petrol stations today mainly under the Star brand (563 stations). In addition, a few petrol stations are operated under the Orlen and Famila brands .
The company originally intended to establish its network of petrol stations on the German market under the Orlen brand . For strategic reasons, however, the decision was made as early as 2007 to put the Star brand at the center of the brand identity.
Current developments
Most recently, in December 2010, the company acquired a total of 56 filling stations from the mineral oil company OMV . With this purchase, Orlen expanded its network of filling stations to a total of 574 locations and strengthened its market presence in Saxony and Thuringia .
particularities
At many Star petrol stations it is possible to purchase products that are otherwise only available in Poland.
