Ortel is a Czech hard rock band that can be assigned to right-wing rock . It was founded by Tomáš Ortel (actually: Tomáš Hnídek), who was also the front man of the neo-Nazi band Conflict 88 (“88” is a scene code for Heil Hitler ) from 1994 to 2007 .

Band history

Ortel was founded in 2002 parallel to Conflict 88. Ortel himself states that the band was founded out of dissatisfaction with the outcome of the Velvet Revolution . In 2007 the first album … Nevinnej was released as an in-house production. The song Hadr became the official anthem of the right-wing extremist party Dělnická strana (DS), which was later banned . Ortel released two more albums on the Identity Records label, before the other albums with patriotic to right-wing extremist lyrics continued to be self-distributed. The fifth album Mešita , which shows the singer in the hands of masked terrorists, sparked outrage among the Muslim population of the Czech Republic because Ortel defamed Islam in his songs. Muslims are portrayed as terrorists and murderers. The theme song was viewed more than three million times on the YouTube video platform .

In 2014 the band was nominated for the first time for the Czech music award Český slavík Mattoni (Czech Nightingale) in the category “Best Band”. The winner of the prize will be determined via an SMS voting system. The band finished fourth with 11,838 votes. In 2015 the band reached number 2 with 27,062 votes. The awarding of the prize was criticized in many European media. Singer Tomáš Ortel reached 3rd place in the category “Artist of the Year”. In front of him were record winner Karel Gott , who received the award personally despite a serious illness, and Tomáš Klus. Ortel was supported by various right-wing extremist parties. Adam Bartoš from Národní demokracie had already called on them to vote for the band. The Dělnická strana sociální spravedlnosti (DSSS), the successor to the DS, congratulated the band after the award. In the run-up, critics had tried to prevent the band from performing, but failed due to the unwillingness of the organizer Musica Bohemica to disqualify the band.

style

Musically, the band ranges from rock to hard rock . According to some critics, the music as well as the production are below average and the lyrics are "on the intellectual level of a child". While Tomáš Ortel's earlier band was clearly part of the neo-Nazi spectrum, the singer describes the follow-up project Ortel as merely patriotic . In fact, some of the band's lyrics are clearly Islamophobic and serve people's fears of minorities. One of her songs says, " In honor of Allah, they will chop off your head ." Other lyrics are homophobic and anti-Roma . He tries to pack his hate messages mainly in moderate, legal texts.
