Orthomol is a German family company based in Langenfeld . It was founded in 1991 by Kristian Glagau and is now run by his son Nils and Michael Schmidt. Orthomol specializes in dietary supplements with micronutrient combinations and is the market leader in the field of orthomolecular medicine . The medical importance of such products is controversial.

history

Kristian Glagau, founder of Orthomol

At the end of the 1980s, Kristian Glagau developed the idea of selling orthomolecular products in Germany. The approach of using complex dosed vitamins , minerals and trace elements for the prevention or nutritional treatment of diseases was already established in the United States . In 1991 Kristian Glagau finally founded Orthomol with his partner Hans Dietl. They developed specific micronutrient combinations based on scientific knowledge. For the production and the warehouse they initially used the premises at Glagau's residence in Langenfeld. The company grew continuously, so that the capacities were gradually expanded. At the turn of the millennium , Orthomol had exceeded 100 employees.

The company developed into one of the leading providers in the micronutrient segment. In 2003 the Federal Association of German Management Consultants recognized this development with the prestigious "Company Award". In 2006, German pharmacists awarded Orthomol for its "expertise in vitamins, food supplements and minerals". In addition to activities on the German market, the focus shifted to international expansion, in addition to Europe to Russia and the United States, as well as the Middle East and Asia. Orthomol survived the global economic and financial crisis from 2007 without major problems.

Kristian Glagau, founder and managing director of Orthomol, died in 2009. The company remained in family hands and was continued by his two children together with Michael Schmidt, who was managing director in Glagau during his lifetime. The business strategy remained largely unchanged, but the product range was continuously expanded. In 2014, Nils Glagau and Michael Schmidt finally remained at the head of the company's operations. Both have increased sales to almost 100 million euros to date.

Group structure

Orthomol headquarters in Langenfeld

The company's parent company is Orthomol Holding, a limited liability company under German law. Its business purpose includes the acquisition, establishment, sale, administration and holding of investments and the management of companies that have the production and distribution of pharmaceutical products, in particular dietetic foods, medical products, nutritional supplements and cosmetics as their object. The Orthomol Holding together with its German- and international subsidiaries consolidated for the next to the year , a consolidated financial statements are prepared.

Nils Glagau (Marketing and Sales) and Michael Schmidt (Purchasing, Production, Logistics and Technology) are currently managing directors. The ownership structure of the group is shaped by two family lines, the founders of which are Nils Glagau and Gesche Hugger.

Products

The Orthomol range includes products for almost every area of life. These include women's, men's and children's health, the immune system, the musculoskeletal system, heart and circulation, eyes, as well as the brain, nerves and energy metabolism, but also vegan nutrition and sport. The products include not only food supplements, but also nutrient combinations that are used as a supplementary balanced diet for illnesses or complaints (“foods for special medical purposes”). The best known is "Orthomol Immun", which is supposed to support the body's own defense and should be used in the case of recurrent infections.

engagement

In the 2017/18 season , the company acted as the main sponsor of the second division Fortuna Düsseldorf . In the Handelsblatt there was talk of a "coup" that would get Orthomol a lot of attention. After the club's promotion to the first Bundesliga , the cooperation was continued in a different form. Orthomol has been the official nutrition partner of Fortuna Düsseldorf since 2019.

Orthomol is an example of successful employer branding , especially due to measures to reconcile family and work and the above-average support for apprentices. In addition, the company's own fitness studios and sports halls were set up at the headquarters.

criticism

There are doubts about the effectiveness of the products from Orthomol and other manufacturers, which has not been scientifically proven according to Evidence-Based Medicine criteria so that the products cannot be found in guidelines or recognized textbooks.

In 2014, for example, Spiegel Online was of the opinion that Orthomol Immun had "neither a single substance nor a combination of proven effects in the prevention of diseases". In 2018, WirtschaftsWoche wrote that the company was selling “dubious products with exemplary marketing”. A healthy and balanced diet makes the administration of food supplements unnecessary. With minors there is also the risk of exceeding the recommended daily maximum amount of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).
