The sulfobenzoic acids (or sulphobenzoates) constitute a group of substances, which, both from the in chemistry benzoic acid as well as the benzenesulfonic acid is derived. The structure consists of a benzene ring with attached carboxy  (–COOH) and sulfonic acid groups  (–SO 3 H) as substituents . Their different arrangements ( ortho , meta or para ) result in three constitutional isomers with the empirical formula C 7 H 6 O 5 S.

properties

Due to the spatial arrangement of 2-sulfobenzoic acid, ring closure can occur between the two functional groups. The resulting compound (it lacks one H 2 O) is known as 2-sulfobenzoic anhydride with the empirical formula C 7 H 4 O 4 S.

Derivatives

Sulfobenzoic acids form the starting point for various salts , esters , amides , various chlorinated and other derivatives derived therefrom .

This also includes the saccharin C 7 H 5 NO 3 S, which can be regarded as a 2-sulfobenzoic acid imide, and its derivatives. Another derivative is e.g. B. 5-sulfosalicylic acid (2-hydroxy-5-sulfobenzoic acid) C 7 H 6 O 6 S

Further derivatives are:

  • 2-sulfobenzoic acid dichloride C 7 H 4 Cl 2 O 3 S, CAS number: 34684-21-4
  • 3-sulfobenzoic acid dichloride C 7 H 4 Cl 2 O 3 S, CAS number: 4052-92-0
  • 4-sulfobenzoic acid dichloride C 7 H 4 Cl 2 O 3 S, CAS number: 7516-60-1
