Orthotylus moncreaffi is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 2.6 to 3.3 millimeters long. The species of the genus Orthotylus are predominantly green in color. Many are extremely similar and are therefore very difficult to determine based on external characteristics. The host plants of the respective individuals are therefore an important indicator. Orthotylus moncreaffi is relatively small and has a strongly oval curved body. In addition to green, there are also reddish colored individuals.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts from Denmark across the Iberian Peninsula to Asia Minor. In Germany it occurs only on the North Sea coast and can be common there in suitable places. It is absent in the interior. Beach and salt meadows are settled.

Way of life

The bugs live on various salt plants from the foxtail family (Amaranthaceae). They are found mainly on samphire ( Salicornia ), but also on potash brine ( Kali turgida ), purslane wedge ( Halimione portulacoides ), beach sod ( Suaeda maritima ), goose feet ( Chenopodium ) and bulls ( Atriplex ). It is unknown whether the species also lives on sunflower family (Asteraceae) such as beach wormwood ( Artemisia maritima ) or beach aster ( Tripolium pannonicum ). Adult bedbugs appear from June to August, suggesting a generation developing per year. In the Mediterranean region, adults can still be found in October, which is why one concludes here that there are two generations per year.
