Local office
In several federal German cities, the term local office refers to public services at the district or district level, whereby a local office can also be responsible for several city districts. The local offices are each led by a local office manager .
There are only local offices in Bremen (since 1946) and Rostock, and earlier also in Hamburg (1943 to 2007) and Dresden (1991 to 2018).
Bremen
In the city of Bremen , the local office has been a local administrative authority since 1946. There are 17 local offices in Bremen, which carry out tasks for the city or district independently.
The city of Bremen's local offices have the task of supporting the advisory councils working for them in the fulfillment of their tasks and of representing their decisions with the authorities. Other tasks that can be carried out locally can also be delegated by the authorities to the local offices as branch offices.
The local office managers are elected by the respective advisory boards and appointed full-time or honorary by the Senate .
Rostock
In Rostock , there are five local offices, in 2006 there were eight.
Hamburg
In Hamburg , the local office was not an independent authority, but a decentralized office of the district office , which was set up to be close to the citizens . For each of the Hamburg local offices there was a local committee, which was filled according to the election results of the respective district and covered the responsible local office area. There were 15 local offices in Hamburg (as of 2005). As of January 31, 2007 the local offices in Hamburg were abolished.
Dresden
The term was used similarly in Hamburg's twin city Dresden . According to the municipal code of the Free State of Saxony, city districts can be set up as subordinate administrative bodies in independent cities. Since the term " city district " had already been used for the Dresden city subdivisions between 1958 and 1991, but these five districts had covered very large areas, the aim was to reorganize Dresden into smaller subdivisions so that the local residents could get along better were able to identify, no longer use this term, which is considered to be biased. There have been ten local offices in Dresden since 1991. Sub-districts that were later incorporated were combined to form localities that have far-reaching powers in relation to local offices. In September 2018, the local offices were renamed city district offices; accordingly, the local authority areas became urban districts.
