The Osborne Mine is 195 kilometers southeast of Mount Isa in Queensland , Australia . The mine is copper and gold mined .

The mine was opened in 1995 as an opencast mine , in February 1996 underground mining began and in 1998 an underground crushing and ore conveyor system was put into operation. From 2006 to 2010 it was operated by Barrack Australia Limited , a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold , which bought it from Placer Dome for $ 10.4 billion .

The Osborne ore body is located in a ferrous rock that has been metamorphically impressed several times . The main ore body is located next to a formation from the Mesozoic Era , next to it is another parallel ore body and at the southern end another ore body. The most important copper mineral that occurs is finely divided chalcopyrite ; the host rock is a silicified breccia . Next to the Osborne Mine is another ore body called the Kulthor.

Ivanhoe Mining took over the mine in September 2010 and will develop the Kulthor ore deposit about two kilometers away. Ivanhoe Mining resumed mining operations in March 2012.

The Osborne Mine extracts approximately 2 million tons of ore and produces 150,000 tons of copper-gold concentrate, grading 23.5 percent copper and 6.5 grams of gold per ton. The concentration process also produces gold that can be processed into gold bars.

On the mine site there is a copper and gold concentrator , a gas and diesel powered power station, a camp for 470 employees and a runway for aircraft.
