Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium in Ravello

The Oscar-Niemeyer-Auditorium is an Italian concert hall with 400 seats and an area of 1800 m² in Ravello on the Amalfi Coast . It was named after its designer, the Brazilian architect and important exponent of classical modernism , Oscar Niemeyer .

Design and construction

Traditionally, a Richard Wagner concert series takes place every summer in the park of Villa Rufolo von Ravello, which commemorates Wagner's stay there in 1880. In July 2000, the Fondazione Ravello commissioned the architect Oscar Niemeyer to design a concert hall so that it could also offer a venue in winter. Niemeyer chose the simple shape of a wave made of concrete painted white, which lies 300 meters above sea level on the cliff. While the auditorium is adapted to the terrain, the orchestra room protrudes over the steep slope. Niemeyer also designed the seating. The building is certified to have excellent acoustics. In front of the concert hall there is a large exposed concrete terrace, on which cultural events also take place. Niemeyer designed the project in his office in Rio de Janeiro and was never there. The construction in Ravello was carried out by Alvisi Kirimoto + Partners.

costs

The construction costs of around 18 million euros were largely borne by the European Union . The running costs were met by the Foundation of the Bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena until 2010 . Since then, the operation of the auditorium and the festival have been financed by the Campania region with over one million euros annually.

Opening and use

Due to various legal proceedings, construction could only begin in October 2006. Among other things, the environmental protection organization Italia Nostra had raised an objection. The point of criticism was the disruption of the Amalfi Coast, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . The hall was finally opened on January 29, 2010 with a concert by the Teatro San Carlo from Naples and the following day with a concert by Lucio Dalla , but closed again immediately afterwards because the municipality and the Fondazione Ravello did not have the operation of the concert hall could agree. In December 2010 the European Commission requested information about the situation. In March 2012, the newspaper La Repubblica reported that the building, still barely used, was already showing signs of deterioration. In 2015, the auditorium was also used for winter events for the first time. Some concerts were given in the 2016 season, but most of the events of the Ravello Festival continue to take place in Villa Rufolo .
