Oscar John Almquist (born March 7, 1908 in Eveleth , Minnesota , † December 16, 1986 ) was an American ice hockey goalkeeper and coach . The goalkeeper played as a professional for Eveleth and St. Paul before becoming known as a high school coach through his many years of successful work for Roseau High School .

Almquist grew up in Eveleth and played from 1923 to 1927 in the local high school team. After graduating, he served Virginia in a regional amateur league for two years before going to St. Mary's College in Winona , Minnesota. There he became an All-American player in 1932 . He then began his professional career with the Eveleth Rangers in the Central Hockey League . After a year he went to the St. Paul Saints (CHL, from 1935 American Hockey Association ), for which he was active for three years. He was appointed to the Allstar team twice (1934, 1936).

In 1937 he returned to Northern Minnesota and began working as a high school ice hockey coach. He let his playing career end with the amateur team Roseau Cloverleafs . In 1938 he went to Roseau High School , for whose B team he was initially responsible. He later became head coach and established the Rams as one of the top teams in Minnesota. With a total of 14 participations in the State Tournament , they won the title four times (1946, 1958, 1959 and 1961). Between 1957 and 1959, the Rams won 49 games in a row. When he retired in 1967 he had a record of 404 wins, 148 defeats and 21 draws. He then took over the leadership of the high school.

In 1983 he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
