Oscar Paulino Arredondo de la Mata (born July 18, 1918 in Havana , Cuba , † July 20, 2001 there ), better known as Oscar Arredondo , was a Cuban paleontologist . He is considered the "father of Cuban paleornithology ".

Live and act

Although his birthday is officially given as July 18, 1918, according to Arredondo's mother, the actual date of birth was June 18, 1918. He had six siblings, two sisters and four brothers. In 1927 he went to an elementary school, which he left after the fifth grade in 1932 to go to work and to support the family financially. Arredondo has been fascinated by nature since childhood. He taught himself a lot of knowledge, especially in ornithology . From the beginning, animal life and behavior have been his passion.

From 1936 to 1941 he performed as a tango singer in various Havana theaters. In 1942 he worked in a clothing store and then as a hairdresser for four years. He also worked as a photographer, fruit seller and representative of a theater agency where some of his brothers were employed. In his spare time he read a lot, observed animals and developed an extraordinary talent for drawing. In 1945 Arredondo joined the Cuban Speleological Society. A year later he started his paleontological field work. In 1948 he was hired as a messenger at the Cuban Ministry of Communications, a job he did until his retirement in 1984. In addition, Arredondo devoted himself to the study of extinct vertebrates of Cuba, where he discovered numerous new fossil and sub-fossil species of the Pleistocene and Holocene. In 1939 Arredondo wrote his first scientific article. In the following years he wrote for the journals Bohemia , Carteles , El Cartero Cubano , Lux e Ecos and Poeyana, among others .
