Oscar Bongard

Oscar Bongard (born July 7, 1872 in Strasbourg , † after 1935) was a German civil servant and military director.

Life

He was the descendant of a Westphalian farming family and was born in Alsace , which had previously fallen to the German Empire. After attending grammar school, he studied at the University of Strasbourg , where he took the doctoral examination in 1905. The subject of his inaugural dissertation, printed in 1906, was Workers' Conditions and Attempts at Settlement in the Portuguese possessions of Sao Thomé, Angola and Portuguese East Africa .

Oscar Bongard initially worked as a civil servant in the regional government of Alsace-Lorraine. In 1901 he switched to colonial service in German East Africa , where he was head of the governor's central office until 1904. From 1905 to 1906 he was then district chief in German South West Africa and was a contemporary witness of the local genocide of the Herero and Nama , which the Germans called the Herero uprising . In 1907 and 1908 Oscar Bongard made extensive trips through German East and South Africa, stayed in India in 1911 and 1912 and then in North America. From then on he worked as a colonial writer and war correspondent. He took an active part in the First World War, entered the senior management position in 1915 and moved to the military management position in Berlin at the end of the war in 1918 . There he took an active part in the suppression of the armed Spartacus uprising .

In 1922 Oscar Bongard became a member of the Reich Pension Office and from 1923 he was a consultant in the Reich Ministry of the Interior. In the time of National Socialism, he worked as a leader in the RDB .

Oscar Bongard lived in Strausberg near Berlin at Kaiserstrasse 25. His son of the same name, born in 1894, became a footballer.
