Oscar Mayer (politician)

Oscar Mayer (born June 4, 1916 in Samedan ; † October 9, 2011 in Chur ; resident in Tschlin ) was a Swiss politician ( SP ).

Life

Family and work

Born in Samedan, Oscar Mayer, son of postal worker Michel Mayer, trained as a typesetter after completing compulsory school . After he had been employed in his learned profession in Samedan and Chur in the following years, in 1949 he took over the position of workers secretary at the Graubünden trade union cartel in Chur, which he held until 1964.

The non-denominational Oscar Mayer was married to the Bormio native Clara Virginia, born Pergmann. He died in Chur in autumn 2011 at the age of 96.

Political career

Oscar Mayer, member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP), had been a part-time member of the Chur City Council (executive) from 1950, and from 1964 until his formal retirement in 1980 , where he headed the Department of Social Affairs and Schools and police. In addition, from 1950 to 1975 he was President of the School Council of Passugg-Araschgen. In addition, Oscar Mayer represented his party for years in the Grand Council of Graubünden and in the National Council from January to December 1963 .

In his role as city council, Oscar Mayer was particularly committed to promoting weaker students, creating good working conditions for city staff and improving civil protection .
