Oscar Oldberg

Oscar Oldberg (born January 22, 1846 in Alfta , † February 27, 1913 in Pasadena (California) ) was an American pharmacologist.

The son of the pastor and book author Anders Oldberg studied pharmacy in Falun from 1861 to 1865 after attending grammar school with Fredrik W. Helleday , a student of Jöns Jakob Berzelius . He then emigrated to the USA and in 1869 became a teacher at the School of Pharmacy at Georgetown College . He then worked until 1881 as dean and professor of pharmacy at the National College of Pharmacy in Washington, which awarded him an honorary doctorate when he left .

From 1874 to 1881, Oldberg was a supplier to the United States Marine Hospital Service . From 1880 to 1910 he was a member of the Committee of Revision and Publication of the Pharmacopoeia of the USA. In 1886 he founded the School of Pharmacy at Northwestern University in Chicago and became its first dean.

Oldberg wrote numerous books on chemistry, pharmacology and metrology. His son Eric Oldberg became President of the Chicago Board of Health and the administration of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra . His son Arne Oldberg became known as a composer.
