Oscar de Somville

Oscar Charles de Somville (born August 19, 1876 in Ghent ; † August 30, 1938 ibid) was a Belgian rower who was second in the Olympics twice and won eight European championships.

Oscar de Somville rowed for the Koninklijke Roeivereniging Club Gent . This club placed eighth several times , who represented Belgium at the European Championships . From 1897 to 1910 the Belgian eight won the title at the European championships twelve times, the French boat only won in 1905 and 1909. Oscar de Somville was in the victorious boat in 1900 , 1901 , 1902 , 1906 , 1907 and 1908 . In 1900 he won in the four with helmsman , finished second in 1908 and 1909 and was third in 1902. Together with Marcel Van Crombrugge and helmsman Alfred van Landeghem he won in two with helmsman in 1902 and was third in 1900.

At the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1900 , a total of five boats competed in the eight, including the eight from Ghent. Since the French boat gave up in the run, all boats that reached the finish in the run also reached the final. In the final, the boat from the Vesper Boat Club from Philadelphia won, with the eighth from Ghent finishing second, six seconds behind.

Eight years later, two boats competed against each other in the finals of the four boat classes at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London . The Ghent eight with Oscar de Somville was the only foreign boat to reach a final and was defeated by the Leander Club crew .
