Oskar Hellmann

Oskar Hellmann (born September 29, 1869 in Ratibor - Ostrog , † June 22, 1944 in Glogau ) was a Silesian publisher , bookseller , author, family researcher and curator of the art monuments of Silesia.

Life

Hellmann was the ninth child of the estate and brickworks owner Carl Hellmann and his wife Josefine Ottilie Hellmann, nee. Stroka, who came from a Polish family in Racibórz. He was the cousin of Johannes Hellmann , the "father of the fire brigades in Silesia".

After attending grammar school in Ratibor and Breslau, Hellmann did an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Breslau and then worked there for some time in this profession. In 1898 he founded his own publishing house in Jauer , where he a. a. from 1901 to 1903 edited and published the literary monthly Janus .

In 1908 he moved with his publishing house to Glogau and gave a. a. In 1913 Julius Blaschke published the great city chronicle of the city of Glogau and the Glogauer Land , which was published in 1982 by the Glogauer Heimatbund e. V. has been reissued as a reprint.

In 1931, after decades of research, he published his family book Die Hellmann. The picture of a German family . In his research he had succeeded in tracing his ancestors back to Cologne in the 15th century. Oskar Hellmann lived and worked in Glogau until his death in 1944. His extensive family archive went up in flames soon after his death when the city of Glogau was almost completely destroyed at the end of the Second World War.
