Oskar Hinterleitner (born November 10, 1891 in Gmunden ; † March 24, 1978 ) was an Austrian economic functionary and NSDAP regional economic advisor in the Upper Danube region and president of the Linz Chamber of Commerce and Industry .

Life and functions

After elementary school learned Hinterleitner the Hafner craft and attended six semesters of college for ceramics. After practicing at home and abroad, he became managing director of the first Linzer clay oven factory in Schadler , where he also became a partner. From 1915 to 1918 he served in the 84th Infantry Regiment during the First World War and received several awards. Hinterleitner was already active for the NSDAP around 1930 and joined the party in May 1933. After the NSDAP was banned in June 1933, he worked illegally for the party, including as head of the National Socialist Crafts, Trade and Industry Organizations (NS-HAGO) and was therefore imprisoned several times.

When Austria was "annexed" to the German Reich , he was appointed to the state government of Upper Austria under the leadership of August Eigruber and took over the department of " Agriculture, Settlement and Reallocation, Economy and Labor " in the regional governing body established in 1939 . In addition, in August 1938 he was appointed NSDAP regional economic advisor for the Upper Austrian region , and from 1938 to 1944 he was president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Linz Chamber of Commerce. In 1938, Hinterleitner also joined the SS , where he became SS-Obersturmbannführer .

Other functions that Hinterleitner had taken on were membership in the administrative committee and board of directors of the Allgemeine Sparkasse Linz , in the board of directors of the Upper Austrian regional fire damage insurance company and in the supervisory board of Zellwolle Lenzing AG . He was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Steyrermühl paper mill and had the offices of the President of the Board of WOLFSEGG-TRAUNTHALER KOHLENWERKS AG and the Supervisory Board of the paper mill Pötschmühle AG in bettors held in what is now the Czech Republic. South Bohemia was then part of the Upper Danube Gau .

Participation in "Aryanizations"

As a NSDAP regional economic adviser, Hinterleitner was managing director of the "Handels- und Industriegesellschaft mb H. Linz" , in which the "Aryanized" assets were combined.

Together with Gauleiter Eigruber, Hinterleitner pushed ahead with the “de-Jewification” of the medium-sized economy. Although he was unable to make any legally effective decisions in his function as a Gau economic consultant, he managed to influence the responsible state departments with the help of the Gauleiter and to establish a network of relationships between the departments that he would be involved in many " aryanization procedures " Goal achieved.

This can be demonstrated using the example of the Kraus & Schober department store , which was then the largest and most modern department store in Linz. This business had been systematically denigrated as a “horrible junk shop” by the then illegal “Austrian observer” as early as 1936 . In the “Aryanization” of the department store, the “Handels- und Industriegesellschaft” led by Hinterleitner was involved , which the company acquired for the far too low purchase price of 350,000 RM , payable to the district administration. On March 15, 1938, shortly after the “Anschluss” of Austria, the following notification was made to the customers: “We announce that the Jews have been removed from the Kraus and Schober company in Linz and that the company is now being transferred to a National Socialist working group has been."

The merger of the Steyrermühl paper factory with the "aryanized" paper factory Pötschmühle AG was also "exemplary" for the approach taken by Eigruber and his intelligent and extremely knowledgeable regional economic advisor, Hinterleitner . While Hinterleitner, as chief negotiator for the Gau, intimidated the owners to such an extent that they sold their shares to Wolfsegg-Traunthaler Kohlenwerk AG , of which Hinterleitner was Chairman of the Board of Directors, at below market value, Eigruber successfully negotiated with the government agencies actually responsible. When Hinterleitner took over the position of board member or chairman of the supervisory board, the NSDAP Gauleitung then took control of the newly formed companies.

Hinterleitner invested a lot of time and effort with the "Aryanization process" to present it as "legal". He and his accomplices cited this “legality” in their defense after the end of the Nazi regime.

After 1945

Hinterleitner was arrested on July 4, 1945 by the CIC in Grieskirchen . Until mid-1947 he was a prisoner in the Glasenbach internment camp , a camp for senior party functionaries of the NSDAP, then in custody in Linz. A people's court proceedings because of his involvement in the "Aryanization" of the Pötschmühle was set in 1948. In December 1948 he made a “request for indulgence for the consequences of expiation under Section 27 of the Prohibition Act 1947 , and in 1950 it was approved.

Between 1950 and 1963 he was employed again in the Chamber of Commerce . He was also a board member of the Association of Austrian Industrialists in Upper Austria and an honorary citizen of Oberneukirchen .

The Upper Austrian Heimatwerk whose co-founder and honorary president Hinterleitner was, wrote in 1972: The chairman of the supervisory board, " Kommerzialrat Oskar Hinterleitner, was the occasion of his 80th birthday, the subject of numerous honors. The Heimatwerk organized an evening for him, on which castle actor R. Eybner offered samples of his performance. "
