Together with his wife Ursula Ida Lapp he founded in 1959 in Stuttgart , the UI Lapp KG (now UI Lapp GmbH ). Today the Lapp Group is a global company in the field of cable technology with around 3000 employees and around 805 million euros in sales (2007/2008).

Life

Oskar Lapp initially trained as a lathe operator and mechanic and joined his parents' company, which produces turned parts and valves . After the Second World War and five years of Soviet captivity , he studied mechanical engineering at the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences from 1949 to 1952 .

In 1951 he married Ursula Ida Emmelmann. In 1957 the family moved to Stuttgart . There Oskar Lapp took a job as an engineer at Harting .

Professional activity

In 1958, Oskar Lapp invented the world's first industrially manufactured control cable . The product later became known under the brand name Ölflex®. Before the invention, individual wires were drawn into hoses . Since all components were black, the effort for assigning the associated cable ends was very complex. With the invention of the color code for single wires, the effort was significantly reduced. His company was the first to offer pre-produced cable harnesses in the length required by the customer. In 1959 he and his wife founded UI Lapp KG. In the following years the company grew continuously to become today's international company.

Honors

Oskar Lapp was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1981 for his extensive activities in the interests of the common good, for example in the German-South African Society or in the Stuttgart Monument Foundation. He died in 1987 of heart disease. In 1992 the family established the Oskar Lapp Foundation in his memory, which supports research into heart disease. In 2004 the city of Stuttgart honored the entrepreneur by naming a street after him. A hall at Messe Stuttgart has been bearing his name since 2007 .
