OsmAnd is a mobile app for mobile navigation and available for the operating systems Android from version 4.0 and iOS . OsmAnd uses the map data of the OpenStreetMap project (OSM), but is an independent project and not part of OpenStreetMap. OsmAnd is essentially designed for offline operation and thus also offers services in areas with no or limited internet connection, e.g. B. when hiking in the mountains or in remote areas, appropriate navigation options.
Since the entire global map material from the OpenStreetMap project represents too much data volume for most mobile devices, the OSM map data are offered for selective download in the context of the project in different resolutions and divided for different countries and regions. OsmAnd also provides points of interest for the environment at your own point of view , which you can search for and filter by categories.
In addition to the map data from the OSM project, which do not provide detailed elevation information, the freely usable SRTM data from NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission for creating contour lines and terrain profiles are also supported via a plug-in from OsmAnd. The free “Nautical Charts” plug-in enables nautical charts to be displayed using the OpenSeaMap map sets, also without an Internet connection.
In a comparison by the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration on the data protection friendliness of smartphone apps, published in January 2018, OsmAnd achieved top marks above all of the other 4 apps tested.
Executions
