Osman Achmatowicz

Osman Achmatowicz (born April 16, 1899 in Bergaliszki near Aschmjany , † December 4, 1988 in Warsaw ) was a Polish chemist and university professor of Tatar descent .

He was the son of the lawyer Aleksander Achmatowicz, Minister of Justice and Senator of the People's Republic of Crimea (1917–1918), after 1918 Senator of the Second Polish Republic and his wife Emilia nee. Kryczyński. Osman Achmatowicz attended secondary school in Saint Petersburg until he graduated from high school in 1916. In 1918 he came to Vilna with his family .

Achmatowicz fought in the Polish-Soviet War (1920) in the regiment of the Tatar Uhlans .

While studying at the Stefan Bathory University in Vilnius (diploma in 1925) he was a member of the Konwent Polonia student union .

He was appointed professor at the University of Warsaw (1934–1939 and 1953–1969) and at the Łódź Polytechnic (1946–1953).

During the Second World War he took part in secret lessons.

In 1945 he was elected a member of the Polish Academy of Learning , in 1952 a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences . Since 1984 he was a member of the Warsaw Science Society .

From 1964 to 1969 he held the post of Director of the Polish Cultural Institute in London .

In 1960 he received an honorary doctorate from the Łódź Polytechnic .

Achmatowicz dealt with organic chemistry , especially the chemistry of alkaloids , steroids and sulfones, as well as plant chemistry . The Achmatowicz reaction is named after him.

Private

Achmatowicz married Helena geb. Stankiewicz and became the father of Emilia (* 1927), Osman (* 1931) and Selim (* 1933). Both sons also became chemists.

Osman Achmatowicz was awarded the Officer's Cross in 1951 and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 1954 . He was buried in the Tatar cemetery in Warsaw .
