The Konwent Polonia (Polish: Korporacja akademicka Konwent Polonia ) is the oldest Polish student union . It was founded in 1828 at the University of Tartu (then: Imperial University of Dorpat ) and saw itself in the tradition of the Philomaths Union and the Assembly of the Philaretes (Polish: Zgromadzenie Filaretów), both of which had previously united Polish students from the University of Vilnius underground . The Polonia was originally a country team and patriotic organization.

Colors and motto

The ribbon colors of the Polonia are amaranth -Blue-white. The motto is one for all and all for one! The embroidery of the fox lid has an interesting peculiarity . Here, symbolic reference is made to five Polonia members who were killed in duels with German fraternity students in the 19th century.

The Polonia described here is not to be confused with the St. Petersburg connection Polonia, which existed from 1838 to 1846 and had white-red-silver colors. Nor is it one of the several names of the same - sometimes secret - connections in then German university cities, such as the Greifswald student union Polonia , which was dissolved on June 9, 1886 by order of the authorities, or such country team connections in Berlin , Breslau and (probably) Königsberg i. Pr.

history

Marshal of Poland, Edward Rydz-Śmigły , at a meeting with representatives of the Polonia in Wilno in 1937

Founded in 1828, many members of the Polonia took part in the November uprising in 1830 and 1831 , so that there was a short-term cessation of active operations. In 1834 it was reactivated, followed by long-term efforts to achieve equality with German connections. In 1851 the Dorpater Chargiertenconvent of the Polonia approved the pistol metering . Large parts of the Polonia also took part in the January uprising of 1863 and 1864 - especially in the partisan fight in Lithuania - mainly in Samogitia . In the following years the activity was continued conspiratorially . Many members lost their lives during the January uprising, and during the years of oppression there were also deportations to Siberia ; many other relatives emigrated.

On December 5, 1909, a cartel was closed with Arkonia . Shortly afterwards, the Russian authorities approved the statute of the Polonia Old Masters Association (Polish: Koło Filistrów Polonii). In 1911 the Polonia organized a big ball in Warsaw ; Another ball followed in 1914 at the Vilnius Aristocratic Club .

After the First World War , the headquarters of the connection was moved to Vilnius. In 1923 a cartel was closed with Welecja and on October 14, 1928 with Jagiellonia. In 1933, Polonia was one of the founding members of the Association of Polish Student Associations (Polish: Związek Polskich Korporacji Akademickich). In the same year, a cartel with the Estonian association Fraternitas Estica was closed.

Shortly after the outbreak of war in 1939 , the association was forced to continue its conspiratorial activity. All relatives were philisted in order to take part in the war. 83 of them died in the war or died in German or Soviet captivity (e.g. in Katyń ). During the time of socialism , a public life of communion could not be led. In exile in London , the elderly gentlemen who lived there organized events (“Philistine Circle”). On May 3, 1998, the Polonia was reconstituted in Gdansk . Since then, she has been taking in Füchse again and teaching the students - as before - the values of patriotism, honor, integrity and reliability. In 2005, Polonia moved into its first post-war building in Sopot . In 2008, the 180th anniversary of the connection was lavishly celebrated.
