Osmium (V) chloride is a chemical compound of osmium from the group of chlorides .

Extraction and presentation

Osmium (V) chloride can be obtained in small quantities by reacting osmium hexafluoride with excess boron trichloride .

It can also be obtained by the action of sulfur dichloride on osmium tetroxide .

properties

Osmium (V) chloride is a black dimeric solid and isomorphic with rhenium (V) chloride . It is sparingly soluble in non-polar solvents. In phosphorus oxychloride it dissolves well with a red-brown color, it is solvated in it and can be isolated from it as the solvate OsCl 5 · POCl 3 .
