description

The Arnsberger Leite is one of the most scenic parts of the entire Altmühltal . The approximately 20.5 hectare area is a significant geotope and has been designated as a nature reserve since 1986 (NSG-00271.01, WPDA 162239). The Arnsberger Leite comprises an elongated, south to south-west exposed, uniform steep slope with steep dolomite rocks and an abrupt transition to the plateau. The dry slope with its valuable semi-dry grass , dry grass , edge , rock and forest communities is one of the very old hut areas in the Altmühltal.

Mighty dolomite cliffs protrude from steep, poor meadows and with scattered juniper bushes that are used as sheep pastures. Species that are usually only found in southeastern Europe or south of the Alps also grow on the steppe heath . In order to preserve these valuable habitats, maintenance measures were carried out in some areas. The aim was and is to gradually reopen the partially overgrown dry grassland and connect it to the larger areas. In addition, the rock heads are freed from shading trees and shrubs.

The slope itself can be divided into several plant communities. At the foot of the slope, the moisture can stay longer and there are semi-dry grasslands alternating with fatty meadow species . The actual semi-arid grassland follows up the slope. Many prickly plants such as the silver thistle or plants up to two meters high with very hairy leaves also thrive there . There is the large-flowered mullein and various orchid species. The slope below the rocks is covered by patchy dry grass. In addition to certain grasses such as Schillergrass , Haldenblaugras also germander , spring fluke and tuberous buttercup are characteristic of this . At the very top are the rocks, rock steps and ledges. They are the habitat for a community of plants known as rock steppe lawns. The whiteclove, the blue lettuce and the mountain rock herb are characteristic. The rare evergreen rockflower , which is otherwise only found in colder areas, also thrives there. Feather grass , which originally comes from the eastern steppes of Europe, is one of the greatest rarities in the Altmühlalb . In June, when it blooms, it is particularly noticeable with an awn up to 30 centimeters long . The grass can be found on a rock terrace below the so-called Yellow Cave. The Yellow Cave has the HFA cadastral number I 100. Another cave, only accessible to climbers, is located in the middle of the rock face. It was used by humans from the Early Bronze Age to the Roman Age. The finds include human skull fragments, which probably indicate human sacrifice.

A special rarity is the insect group of lacewings belonging Dragonfly owlfly . In the Red List of Endangered Animals in Bavaria, this species is classified as critically endangered.

Access

The nature reserve is freely accessible all year round. It is easily accessible on foot on paved hiking trails ( Altmühltal-Panoramaweg ).
