East-West Line (Amsterdam)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The East-West Line is a proposed route of the Amsterdam Metro that will connect the western quarters in Amsterdam Nieuw-West with the city center and the eastern districts. While the construction of such a route has been discussed several times, there are currently no concrete plans.

An east-west line between Geuzenveld and Gaasperplas was already part of the first plans for the Amsterdam metro network from 1968 ( Plan Stadsspoor ). The route should follow the course of today's metro line 53 between the stations Gaasperplas and Verrijn Stuartweg . To the north of this it was to run through Diemen-Zuid and under Middenweg to Muiderpoort station , and then to Geuzenveld via Singelgracht and Jan van Galenstraat. During the construction of today's east lines 53 and 54 , the route was already taken into account: part of the station of an east-west line has already been created under the Weesperplein station, which was originally designed as a transfer point. The station is also the only one of the stops on the east lines to have sideways instead of central platforms. This construction should simplify a later connection with the platforms of the east-west line. When the Vijzelgracht station was built, an east-west line across the north-south line was also taken into account.

Current plans

In 2003, the city of Amsterdam presented the Kiezen voor Stedelijkheid development plan . It proposed an east-west line running between Lelylaan and Muiderpoort stations . An extension in a westerly direction to Osdorp was obvious .

In 2007 the metro network study of the city of Amsterdam was published, in which two variants of an east-west line were discussed:

  • one line from Schiphol Airport and Osdorp to the city center via Vijzelgracht station;
  • a line that follows the same route to the west as the first variant, but turns north in the Leidseplein area to connect to the east lines at Amsterdam Centraal station . This corresponds to the route planned in the 1968 Stadtbahn plan.

In March 2011 the final version of the new urban development plan Amsterdam 2040 - Economisch sterk en duurzaam was published . This includes an east-west line from Schiphol Airport via Osdorp, Cornelis Lelylaan, Overtoom, Weteringschans and Sarphatistraat to the Muiderpoort station as an expansion request for the planning phase after 2030 Template: future / in 5 years. The suggestion from the metro network study to connect the east-west line at the central station to the east lines is no longer discussed here.

In 2015, the metro operator GVB also formulated the wish to improve the accessibility of Schiphol Airport with an east-west line from IJburg via Osdorp to Schiphol.
