Oste -class (internally also class 423 ) is the name for the fleet service boats Alster , Oker and Oste of the German Navy . The fleet service boats are reconnaissance ships that have been equippedwith various sensors for this purpose.

The ships of the Oste class were designed as reconnaissance units during the Cold War . In the meantime, the area of ​​responsibility has been expanded to include early warning and telecommunications tasks in cooperation with other units of German and international armed forces .

The three ships belong to the 1st submarine squadron, which is subordinate to the operational flotilla 1 , and are stationed in Eckernförde . They are the successors to the class 422 predecessor ships with the same name and identifier , which they replaced at the end of the 1980s.

Exact data on the devices on board are not known. According to the website of the Federal Ministry of Defense , it should be about electromagnetic, hydroacoustic and electro-optical devices for strategic information acquisition in crisis areas. Depending on the type of order, up to 40 specialists from all branches of the armed forces can be embarked to operate the early warning, telecommunication and reconnaissance equipment. The ships of the Oste class can operate on their own as well as in an active and communication network with other units and agencies of German and international armed forces.

The Alster (A 50) was taken over by the Navy in 1989 as the successor to the predecessor ship of the same name and with the same designation. Since then, the ship named after the Alster river has led u. a. Missions in the Mediterranean ( Balkans and Lebanon ).

The type ship Oste (A 52) replaced its predecessor ship of the same name in 1988. It is named after the river Oste in Lower Saxony.

The Oker (A 53) was also put into service in 1988 as the successor to the predecessor ship of the same name, a converted former side catcher . It is named after the river Oker in Lower Saxony. From January 1999, the Oker was deployed to support the Kosovo Verification Mission and then Operation Allied Force in the Adriatic .
