Map of the Holm (1909)

As Ostrów , also Wyspa Ostrów (German der Holm ) is an island in the city of Gdańsk ( Danzig ) , Pomeranian Voivodeship , Poland . Wyspa means island in Polish . In 1901 the Holm could still be seen as a peninsula or part of the Danzig Spit . Today the image of the island is shaped by the two shipyards and their crane systems , Stocznia Gdańsk SA (Gdansk Shipyard) in the southern part and Gdańska Stocznia Remontowa SA (Gdansk repair yard ) in the northern part.

history

The Holm (Polish: Chełm ) became an island in the years 1901–1904 when the narrow ditch of the Schuiten Lake to the Gdańsk Imperial Harbor was sunk. Schuiten were the shallow ships of the Dutch, which drained parts of the Danzig lowlands. The Polish name was Łacha Szkutnicza (Bootsbau-Lake, 1425 German Bossmanslake ), today the imperial port is called Kanał Kaszubski ( Kashubian Canal ). It is 2 km long and 230 m wide and can be seen as an artificial arm of the Dead Vistula (Martwą Wisłą) .

While the harbor basin was laid in the north of the Holm in the following years, the two large Danzig shipyards , the Kaiserliche Werft and the Danziger Schichau-Werft, expanded across the Vistula in the south . In 1895 the Holm residential area still had 316 residents. With effect from November 15, 1902, the island was incorporated into the municipality of Danzig. On the stile there was an external labor camp of the marine construction management of the Stutthof concentration camp .

In 1949 the new name Ostrów was determined. The island belongs to the Gdańsk district of Młyniska ( Schellmühl ). Today Ostrów is connected to the mainland by a bridge in the west and a pontoon bridge in the south.
