The OVK built up the mother and father counseling service in St. Gallen and the surrounding area and played a key role in the establishment of the children's hospital in Eastern Switzerland and the child and adolescent psychiatric services of the canton of St. Gallen . In addition, he is committed to expanding the range of services. The Miges Balú (migration and health) project launched in 2004/2005 was initiated by the association. The OVK is the sponsoring association for the

  • Mobile infant counseling (tasks: educational counseling for families with children aged one to six)
  • Specialist office for mother and father counseling in Eastern Switzerland (tasks: contact person for sponsorships, specialists, external institutions and organizations in the canton of St. Gallen and in Appenzell. Promotion of their networking and cooperation, public affairs, public relations)

The association is financed through membership fees and donations, the board is active on a voluntary basis. The municipalities and cantons contribute to the financing of the service mandates.

history

Infant home and nursing school (from 1909): In order to relieve women who had to do factory work, the doctor Frida Imboden-Kaiser opened an infant home in the city of St. Gallen on May 18, 1909, together with committed young St. Gallen women . A nursing school was attached to the nursing home for young women, who could learn the nursing profession there or practice baby care as prospective mothers. In order to create the legal basis, the Association for Infant Care was founded on October 17, 1910 as the supporting organization.

On June 12, 1911, the entry in the commercial register was made: “The aim of the association is to promote the well-being and health of babies by running the nursing home and training women to become maternal and nursing professionals (by holding infant care courses, lectures and related propaganda Events) ». Frida Imboden-Kaiser and the association were interested in more than just looking after babies; they wanted to improve the well-being of mothers and babies.

Advice for mothers (from 1912): In 1912, the association set up a advice center for mothers, which was initially headed by Frida Imboden-Kaiser personally. Counseling for mothers was continuously expanded and increasingly offered in the surrounding communities. In their chronology: Volksbadstrasse (1912), St. Leonhard (1918), Bruggen (1932), Rorschach (1943), Neudorf, Winkeln, Goldach (1963), Abtwil (1967), Kronbühl, Tübach (1968), St. Georgen (1970), Wittenbach (1973), Bernhardzell (1974), Boppartshof (1975), Engelburg, Eggersriet, Waldkirch, Untereggen (1976), Rorschacherberg, Staad (1978), Rotmonten (1982), Riethüsli, Halden (1984), Muolen (1995).

The main cause of the high infant mortality rates were gastrointestinal infections caused by spoiled milk. Following the example of the French gynecologist and perinatal doctor Pierre Budin (1846–1907), the association built a milk kitchen. The ready-to-drink (sterilized) baby food was not only sold in the nursery, but also in various places in the city and in branches in Rorschach, Herisau and Utzwil.

In addition to advising mothers on baby care and the distribution of safe baby food, Frida Imboden-Kaiser and the association were also involved in educational work. They started a campaign to strengthen breast nutrition. At a traveling exhibition, she used impressive tables to show the positive influence of breastfeeding on infant mortality. “Frida Imboden-Kaiser was a pioneer in the field of social medicine for the benefit of mother and child and data-based clinical research. Thanks to their efforts, infant mortality in Eastern Switzerland fell from 16 to 2 percent ”.

Kindermobilienmagazin (from 1918): In 1918 the association set up a children's real estate magazine which loaned out utensils such as baby scales, cots, hot water bottles, bathtubs, etc., as many families lacked the financial means to purchase them. After the end of the Second World War, the children's property magazine lost its importance and was discontinued in the early 1990s.

Mothers School (from 1926): In 1926 the association founded the Mothers School. Living in a close house community, the course participants received instruction and instruction in baby care. Infants and children of preschool age from socially disadvantaged backgrounds were housed in the mothers' school, so that the course participants could gain practical experience at the same time. The costs for the four- or eight-week courses were calculated so that less well-off women could also take part. Pro Juventute supported interested young women by awarding scholarships or paying for the course fee.

In 1964 the association changed its name to Association for Infant and Child Welfare .

Establishment of the Children's Hospital in Eastern Switzerland: Many of the children who were brought to the home suffered from gastrointestinal infections, so that the operation of the infant home developed more and more into an infant hospital. In 1932, Frida Imboden-Kaiser handed over the management of the nursery to the St. Gallen pediatrician Richard Rehsteiner. In 1942, the nursing home was renamed Ostschweizerisches Infant Hospital, which almost only accepted sick children aged 0–2. In 1966, the newly established non-profit “Foundation of Eastern Switzerland Infant and Children's Hospital” replaced the previous sponsorship of the “Association for Infant and Child Welfare”. The purpose of the deed of foundation under Art. 2 included the maintenance of a school for health and nursing. The infant home and nursing school thus became independent institutions. The children's hospital in eastern Switzerland still exists today, and the nursing school was closed as a result of the nationwide reorganization of training in health care.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services St. Gallen (from 1966): On April 1, 1966, the “Association for Infant and Child Welfare” founded the Eastern Switzerland Child Psychiatric Service. The service was opened “to examine and treat mentally ill children and adolescents with severe behavioral disorders, especially those who suffer from a neurosis or organic brain disorder” and was initially housed in the former nursing home. In 1996 the newly established Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services Foundation in St. Gallen took over the sponsorship of the KJPD.

In 1971, the association changed its name and was now called the Eastern Switzerland Association for Infant and Child Care .

In 1978 the mother school was closed. Due to the changed social framework, part-time childcare options were now sought and fewer and fewer small children were given full-time care.

Educational counseling Gigampfi, small child counseling Mobile (from 1984): In 1984 the association founded Gigampfi , an educational counseling service for parents of small children. This closed the care gap between mother and father counseling and entry into preschool. The advice center for parents of preschool children is quickly established.

In 1989 the association was given its current name, Ostschweizer Verein für das Kind .

In 1996 the educational counseling service "Gigampfi" was closed again. It quickly became clear, however, that a department specialized in child-rearing issues was needed again. In 1998, another specialist center for educational issues was created at Burggraben: the Mobile Infant Care Center. It started as a three-year project and was then transferred to normal operation. In 2000, the two areas of mother and father counseling and mobile toddler counseling were merged and the mobile toddler counseling department moved in with mother and father counseling.

Establishment of the Mothers and Fathers Advisory Service in Eastern Switzerland (MVBO) (from 2011): In May 2011, the Association of Eastern Switzerland established the Mothers and Fathers Advisory Service in Eastern Switzerland (MVBO) for children. The specialist office supports advisors and sponsors in technical, personnel and quality issues, is the contact for sponsors, specialists, external institutions and organizations in the canton of St. Gallen and Appenzell and promotes their networking and cooperation. She is actively committed to giving the concerns and needs of young parents and their children more political weight and greater public attention. Examples of activities: Postpartum Depression training.

Projects of the OVK

Miges Balù

The Miges Balù - Health and Migration project is a counseling service provided by the Mother and Father Counseling Service (MVB) to promote a balanced diet and adequate exercise from birth, which is aimed specifically at foreign-language parents in Switzerland. Specifically, the project includes, among other things, the training of mother and father advisors in intercultural skills, the involvement of intercultural mediators, the translation of information about parents and the development of language-independent information material.

The Miges Balù project was developed in 2004 by the Eastern Switzerland Association for Children (OVK) with the support of the Canton of St. Gallen and Suisse Balance (National Project Funding Agency for Nutrition and Exercise from the Federal Office for Health and Health Promotion Switzerland). The OVK pilot project was an impressive success: “Within three years, the proportion of clients from parents from Turkey, ex-Yugoslavia and Sri Lanka increased from 5 to 15 percent to 71 percent. With the support of Suisse Balance, Miges Balù and the findings from the pilot project will be carried out via Caritas Switzerland and in cooperation with cantonal action programs for a healthy body weight in other regions in Switzerland, e.g. in the cantons of St. Gallen, Lucerne, Bern, Thurgau and Aargau multiplied. Caritas employees offer advice centers for mothers and fathers that are tailored to their needs and provide specialist support in the development and implementation of Miges Balù ”.

Eat together instead of alone

The project Eating together instead of lonely is a collaboration between the OVK and the Inner Wheel Club St. Gallen, with the aim of counteracting the loneliness of young parents with their children.

The lunch menu offers parents the opportunity to establish contacts and exchange ideas. In addition, they will receive information about eating and eating behavior from the counselor who is present, as well as instructions on how the children can be encouraged to help prepare food. The children can help with the preparation or play with each other.

PAT - Parents as Teachers

PAT - Learning with Parents is a program developed in the USA. The aim of the program is to strengthen the parenting skills of parents and thus improve their children's educational opportunities. PAT supports and accompanies young families who are exposed to particular stress. Implementation is still in the project phase and will run until 2018. PAT will then be offered by the St. Gallen mother and father counseling service.
