Oswald August Völkel (* 1894 in Oberwaldenburg ; † July 6, 1953 in Greifswald ) was a German miner and archivist .

Life

Oswald August Völkel was the son of a miner from the Silesian mountains. His father lost his life in the mine, just as his mother's father died as a miner.

Völkel attended elementary school in Neuhain after his parents moved there with him. He was prepared by a chaplain to attend grammar school in Waldenburg, but this failed for financial reasons. At the age of 13 he drove his first shift as a miner. He applied as a mountain intern and attended the mountain pre-school. He was then accepted at the mountain school in Gleiwitz . After successfully completing his degree, he got a job in the mining administration in Gliwice. There he got to know an administrative archive for the first time, which aroused his interest in archiving. He suggested the establishment of a city archive in Gleiwitz.

In 1924 he moved from the mining administration to the service of the city of Gleiwitz, where he became traffic director. In 1930 he was appointed Personnel and Administrative Director of the city of Gleiwitz. After the seizure of power by the Nazis, he was dismissed from the municipal service in April 1933rd Due to massive protests, he was reinstated, this time as archive director of Gleiwitz. As such, he published the Gleiwitz yearbooks, among others.

During the Second World War he was head of the Department of Economics and Food in Gleiwitz. At the beginning of 1945 he fled Gleiweitz to Reichenberg, where he headed the library there for a few months. After the end of the war he returned to Gleiwitz to help the Polish city administration with the reorganization of the disorganized city archive. As a German he had to leave Poland and move to Mecklenburg . He found a job at the Rostock University Library and later moved to the State Library in Schwerin .

In September 1947 Oswald August Völkel was appointed to the Schwerin State Main Archives. As early as October 1, 1947, he took over the management of the newly created Greifswald State Archives , which he managed until his death at the age of 59. In Greifswald, he made a special contribution to the repatriation and restoration of the holdings relocated from the Stettin State Archives .

He was buried in the Eldena cemetery in 1953 .
