Oswald III. von dem Bergh (born June 16, 1561 in 's-Heerenberg , † January 27, 1586 near Boksum ) was an officer during the Eighty Years War . First in general government and later in Spanish service.

Life

Oswald was the third son of Count Wilhelm IV von dem Bergh (1537–1586) and Countess Maria von Nassau (1539–1599).

Oswald and his brother Hermann took part in the Battle of Amerongen on June 23, 1585 under the orders of Adolf von Neuenahr . The brothers then defected to the Spaniards during the battle and stabbed the troops of the State General with their cavalry , and the battle was decided.

From then on Oswald and his brother Hermann stood on the side of Verdugo and Taxis and took part in the siege of IJsseloord in autumn 1585 and in the battle of Boksum on January 27, 1586 . Oswald captured a flag from the enemy and waved it happily through the air. His people thought he was the enemy and killed him on the spot.
