Hermann von dem Bergh

Hermann von dem Bergh (born August 2, 1558 in 's-Heerenberg , † August 12, 1611 in Spa ) was a military commander in the general state and later in the Spanish service during the Eighty Years War . He was Count von dem Bergh, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece and governor of Spanish funds from 1593 until his death .

Life

Hermann was the eldest son of Count Wilhelm IV von dem Bergh (1537–1586) and Countess Maria von Nassau (1539–1599).

He first made a career in government services. He was Rittmeister and garrison commander in 's-Heerenberg and Doetinchem . Like his father and brothers, he switched to the Spanish side in 1584, where he continued his career.

During the siege of Deventer in 1591 by Prince Moritz of Orange , Hermann commanded the Spanish garrison of the city of Deventer , but had to surrender after ten days. Two years later he became governor of Spanish funds. He held this office until his death in 1611. He was buried in Braine-l'Alleud .

Marriage and offspring

Hermann married Maria Mencia von Wittem (1581–1613), Margravine von Bergen op Zoom , in 1599 and had a daughter with her:
