Otloh's prayer
Otloh's prayer is an Old High German text that was written in the 11th century in the St. Emmeram monastery in Regensburg and is considered a direct autograph by Otloh von St. Emmeram . The language of prayer is Old Bavarian , the regional variant of Old High German that was written in the Baier tribal duchy in the early Middle Ages .

Otloh's prayer, along with the old Alemannic physiologus and the Sankt Gallen emergency glossator, is one of the latest manuscripts which, due to their sound level, can still be assigned to the Old High German era. However, many linguistic features in it already form a transition to Middle High German language forms, in this case Bavarian-Middle High German, and are therefore closer to modern German. The font is in the Carolingian minuscule, but for the first time capital letters also appear, for example in personal names or to mark the beginning of a sentence.
It is the most extensive prayer of the Old High German language level and is based in part on the Latin prayer " O spes unica, o salus eterna et refugium omnium in te sperantium, deus ". The writer has translated this prayer into Old Bavarian and partially shortened the text. The final sentence " In manus tuas, domine, commendo spiritum et corpus meum " ( transl .: In your hands, Lord, I surrender my spirit and my body) was left in Latin, as was the form of the apostles, saints and church fathers listed .
Typical linguistic features that make prayer recognizable as Old Bavarian are the word " trohtin " for God the Lord, the initial Fortis consonants, where other Old High German idioms have a Lenis consonant ( tu der pist ...), some on Bavarian restricted diphthongs, the conjugation forms of the verbs, the partial omission of the prefix "gi-" or "ga-" in participle constructions ( burt , instead of birth), the rounding of the umlauts to <e> ( megi , for "may") and some specific vocabulary. Some initial <k> are not written as <c>, but as aspirated <ch> ( beat , complain; chanst , can; bidenchest , thought, cheina , none; chindline , children; ...), as it is now only in the southern Bavarian dialects, for example in Tyrol, is spoken. <ch> is to be read as an aspirated <kch>!
