Otmar Scherzer

Otmar Scherzer (born June 10, 1964 in Vöcklabruck , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian mathematician . He is university professor for “Computational Science - Mathematical Modeling and Algorithmics in Application Areas” at the University of Vienna (dual professorship: Faculty of Computer Science and Faculty of Mathematics).

Scherzer studied technical mathematics at the University of Linz , where he received his doctorate in 1990 under Heinz W. Engl . He was scientifically active at his home university, as well as at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the University of Bayreuth and the University of Innsbruck .

His specialties are inverse problems , image processing , modeling and parameter identification . In various research projects, among other things, he dealt with photoacoustic imaging in computer tomography and improved methods for fine dust analysis , as well as for the radar location of avalanche victims .

In 1998 Scherzer won the advancement award of the Austrian Mathematical Society and in 1999 the START award of the Fund for the Advancement of Scientific Research (FWF). In 2005 he was awarded the Science Prize of the State of Tyrol .
