The Ottenstein is a 473.5 meter high elevation made of Augengneis , which, together with the Totenstein, frames the cityscape of the large district town of Schwarzenberg in the Saxon Ore Mountains .

Say

There are various legends about the height. The name Ottenstein is derived either from one of the Ottonian emperors or from a Rhenish count Otto von Siebeneichen, who wanted to marry the daughter of a knight at the Schwarzenberg fortress , but after her untimely death lived as a hermit on Ottenstein, which was later named after him . Another legend tells of a knight Georg who, while trying to jump from the dead stone to the otten stone while trying to escape from a lindworm, crashed into the black water in between .

Bad Ottenstein

After the area below the Ottenstein had been made accessible to stagecoach traffic by the construction of Karlsbader Strasse in 1858, the Schwarzenberg town councilor Bauer planned the construction of a bathhouse. To do this, he acquired an area on the Schwarzwasser that he wanted to set up as a bathing meadow for therapeutic purposes . In 1863 the construction was initiated by Bauer and the Schwarzenberg mayor Friedrich Gustav Weidauer , who was intended, among other things, for follow-up cures for spa guests in Franzensbad and Karlsbad . In a brochure in the year it opened, the facility was referred to as a spruce and pine needle tub, steam and resin bath and Ottenstein whey cure facility . The Kurhaus of the naturopathic institution comprised around 100 guest rooms, a concert hall and a bowling alley. A four-week stay was estimated at 150 to 200 Reichsmarks. After a failed IPO to enlarge the facilities, the property went to the Zwickau court clerk Christian Friedrich Lorenz, who had a concert hall and a horse stable added. Due to the connection of other health resorts to the transport network and the lack of commitment on the part of the owner, the health resort came to a standstill before 1877 and Bauer's restaurant was only used as a summer resort , later as a hotel. During the First World War, Bad Ottenstein was acquired by the industrialist and commercial councilor Goßweiler, who used the building for residential and office purposes. After his death in 1931 the property went to the Girozentrale of Saxony. After the end of the Second World War, the restaurant was renovated and a veterans club was set up in the main building. A youth club was established on the upper floor in 1967. Until the end of the GDR, the buildings deteriorated more and more before they were demolished in 1995 after a brief use as a hardware store and video store. Today there is a parking lot for the neighboring supermarket in its place.

Ottenstein Park

The park on the western and southern slopes of the Ottenstein, laid out in 1847 at the suggestion of Mayor Friedrich Gustav Weidauer , is now a protected landscape part of the town of Schwarzenberg with a size of approx. 3.227 hectares. The view from one of the viewpoints stretches from the old town to the neighboring Beierfeld.
