The Otto Hahn School (often abbreviated as OHS ) is a cooperative comprehensive school in the Hessian city of Hanau in the Kesselstadt district . About 2,000 students attend the school.

General

As one of Hesse's 31 European schools, it promotes linguistically gifted children in particular in the grammar school and upper level through bilingual lessons (this is usually given in the foreign language English ) and a series of project-oriented exchange programs.

In its nature as a cooperative comprehensive school , it unites a grammar school with upper secondary school as well as secondary and secondary school under one roof . Each type of school has its own branch director. Depending on the chosen branch of education, a (qualifying) secondary school certificate, secondary school certificate and high school diploma can be obtained. The cooperative school system of the Otto Hahn School enables a school-internal correction of the chosen school career in individual cases.

As the first Hessian school, the Otto Hahn School in Hanau was named by the Federal Association of German Employers in October 2000 as a mathematical, informatic, scientific and technical Excellence Center ( MINT-EC ). The Otto Hahn School encourages teaching in mathematics and computer science as well as in the natural sciences and in the field of technology .

At the beginning of the 2005/2006 school year, the schooling period in the gymnasium branch was shortened to eight years . After evaluating the experiences made with this, the school system switched back to the school system at the age of nine for the 2011/2012 school year.

There are various working groups and a cafeteria that also offers warm meals.

After the Easter break of the 2010/2011 school year, the complete energetic and fire protection renovation of the main building of the Otto Hahn School began in sections while the school was still in operation. The scope of the work is almost the same as that of a new building, as only the (partially modified) roof remains on its supports. With the beginning of the 2012/2013 school year, lessons on the renovated upper floor could be resumed and the new Brothers Grimm Forum (auditorium with stage) on the ground floor could be used. The natural sciences section was then brought up to date using the same principle. A new floor plan with an atrium and the elimination of the tiered lecture halls enabled plenty of daylight in all classrooms and in almost all adjoining rooms. At the moment (autumn 2017) the corresponding work is in progress in the parts of the building where music, geography and "works" (wood, metal, ceramics) were previously taught. Associated with this conversion is a spatial regrouping of the work areas as well as a fundamental change in the room concept, as a result of which the workshops with their specific equipment are no longer available.
