Otto Beckmann (born May 5, 1908 in Vladivostok , Russia; † February 13, 1997 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor and a pioneer of media and computer art .

Life

The family fled to Austria in 1922, where Otto Beckmann graduated from the HTL Mödling and later the Vienna Art Academy . After graduating in 1941, he became a teacher at the Cracow State School of Applied Arts .

From 1945 he lived as a freelance artist in Vienna and joined the professional association of visual artists in Austria . In 1951 he became a member of the Vienna Secession . In 1958 he was awarded the title of Professor by the Austrian Federal President .

In 1966 he founded ars intermedia - an early collaboration between an artist and scientists (from the Vienna University of Technology ). He took part in the international computer art symposium in Zagreb in 1969 and is one of the pioneers of media and computer art (quote from Peter Weibel ).

His extensive exhibition activities included 25 solo exhibitions and participation in 75 collective exhibitions, many of them abroad.

Beckmann was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .

The artistic work of Otto Beckmann moved in the field of tension between mysticism and algorithm and was of great diversity. It comprised pictures and sculptures, but also new ways of expression such as abstract film (1953) and imaginary architecture (1966).

His works can be found in the Albertina in Vienna, in the Federal Ministry of Education , in the Museum Niederösterreich , in the MUSA Museum Startgalerie Artothek Vienna, in the Neue Galerie Graz , in the Kunsthalle Bremen , in the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe and in several private collections . For public spaces, he designed mosaics on numerous residential buildings in Vienna as well as church gates and windows for sacred buildings by Robert Kramreiter .

In 2005 his son Richard founded the Otto Beckmann Archive to process his estate.
