Otto Hermes
Otto Hermes (born September 10, 1838 in Meyenburg , † March 19, 1910 in Berlin ) was a pharmacist, zoologist and member of the German Reichstag .
Life
Hermes attended the secondary school in Perleberg and became a pharmacist. From 1860 to 1862 he studied natural sciences in Jena and Berlin , passed a pharmaceutical state examination and received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1865 . In 1872 he became an employee of Alfred Brehm , who had opened a show aquarium in Berlin in 1869 . Under this he was initially the second director of the Berlin aquarium Unter den Linden , here he was the first to succeed in producing clear lake water. From 1874 he was the sole director and dedicated himself in particular to the luminous bacillus (Bacillus phosphorescens) and the reproduction of eels . After his death, the aquarium fell victim to soil speculation in Berlin.
From 1881 until his death Hermes was a member of the German Reichstag, first for the German Progressive Party , then for the Liberal Party . His brother was the MP Hugo Hermes . He was also a member of the Berlin city council from 1873 to 1903 .
In 1893 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
